The desire to find a place to belong is one that every human can relate to, and Sam’s story is a beautiful, thought-provoking one that needs to be experienced.If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling.Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class. This is a book that young people will read and come away from feeling a little less alone. Intrusive thoughts are also something I rarely see in movies or television, much less books, and it is so wonderful that Stone has represented that aspect of mental struggle here.

This story takes that cliche and gives it new life OCD comes in all shapes and sizes. Conditions such as OCD are often portrayed as people needing to be clean/organized and pretty much nothing else. The stigma surrounding mental health is slowly disappearing in today’s media and overall conversation, but there is still so much work to be done.

This safe haven opens Sam’s eyes to a new realm of possibilities when it comes to friendships and love – and also makes her question if her illness is really something to run from. Sam soon finds solace in a new world existing in plain sight: Poet’s Corner, a secret club that meets during lunch where students bare their souls through poetry and songwriting. One day, she meets someone new who changes everything: Caroline, a loner who seems to understand her much more than her clique of “friends” ever did. However, she chooses to hide that part of herself from nearly everyone else in her life and strives for normalcy amongst her peers.

Thankfully, she has a solid support system at home and is able to get the help that she needs through medication and therapy. We are introduced to the character of Sam, a high school girl who, we come to realize early on, struggles with severe OCD and intrusive thoughts.
